I read a famous quote about blogs by Mike Butcher: “Blogging is a conversation, not a code.” This actually defines a technical blog for me. For most part of human history, all published writing had been carefully inspected, edited, and approved. In the last decade, blogging has turned the publishing world on its head. A blog allows you to write and publish anything, from anywhere, and with a single click of the mouse the blog is immediately available to billions of people all around the world.
- Focus on writing specific blogs. In order to carve a niche for yourself you need to write about topics that you are passionate about and something that you can spend hours talking about. If you are still not sure, there is an awesome website called Boost Blog Traffic (http://boostblogtraffic.com/blog-topic/) which will tell you if you have the right topic or not.
- Your post should be a one stop solution to the technical issues that the users intend to solve.
- Make sure your blog is interesting and uses a lot of pictures. No one feels like reading pages and pages of boring text.
- Have a catchy headline.
- Follow others blogs and post comments on them and learn the intricacies of blogging.
- Set up Google Analytic's (http://www.google.com/analytics/) to monitor your Blog traffic.
- Let there be an element of "YOU" in your writing. Everyone loves to read different writing styles.
- Write often. People following you want to read your blogs regularly.
- You don't have to fill your blog with all the details available. Keep it short and simple and to the point.
- Don't be offended by the comments posted by others on your blog. Its nice to be thick skinned in the blogging world because everyone has an opinion.
- Cite references and give credit to the original writers wherever required. That the most critical aspect in a technical blog
- Listed are the important tools that all bloggers should install for a better digital footprint : http://www.tipsandtricks-hq.com/8-geeky-tools-every-blogger-must-use-3502
But with
this comes the arduous task of getting the masses to read the blogs. What value
does an online journal (Blog) have if there is no web traffic and no one
reading those blogs? To be successful in the blogging world you need to build
an audience who follow you and read your blogs and give their opinions about
the content. In this blog, I would like to list a few ways to increase web
traffic and get more people to read your blogs.
Start blogging and have your individuality quotient in all your blogs unlike the funny story of Gilbert shown below!!!

So before I came to class, I was actually going to Google for 'how to write a better technical blog' but did not have time to do so and then I found this. Thank you, Shruti for this information. I should really keep in mind that people done like reading but prefer pictures instead. A quick suggestion for you is when you add links to your blog, make them clickable using word . That is helpful for your readers.
ReplyDeleteCheers.
Nice one! It clearly gives an idea to of DOs and DON'Ts to people writing blogs. I could relate to almost all the things that you have pinned down and cross-check my blog. I really liked the Gilbert comic strip which conveys what-not-to-do very clearly.
